چکیده
Metformin (MTF) associated gastrointestinal symptoms are fairly common side effects that adversely affect patients' treatment adherence. However, the variability of in MTF-using patients has not been fully explained. In our study, we aimed to investigate relationship between vitamin B12 deficiency with MTF-related symptoms. Patients type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) using MTF were included study sequentially. Demographic characteristics patients, duration diabetes, dose and used, recorded. Afterward, a hemogram, HgbA1c, measurements performed. without divided into two groups. The groups compared statistical methods. Twenty-five percent had low serum levels. longer duration, usage (p<0.001, p<0.001) than deficiency. There was no correlation dosage (p=0.590). Gastrointestinal seen more frequently group (p=0.025). Bloating constipation, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting commonly (p=0.002, p<0.001, p=0.014, p=0.004, respectively). Three or B12-deficient (p<0.001). both 10 years higher found be 434% likely have active all other patient (OR:5.343, 95%CI (2.173-13.140), p<0.001). Study results shown T2DM taking may gut microbiome changes play role this relationship. particular, recommend who for ≥10 complaints should followed closely

Relationship between metformin use, vitamin B12 deficiency, hyperhomocysteinemia and vascular complications in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Aim of the study was to clarify the relationship between metformin-induced vitamin B12 (B12) deficiency, hyperhomocysteinemia and vascular complications in patients with type 2 diabetes. Serum B12 concentrations, homocysteine plasma levels, the presence of retinopathy and history of macroangiopathy (stroke or coronary heart disease) were analyzed in patients without renal dysfunction (serum cre...
متن کاملStudy of Vitamin B12 deficiency and peripheral neuropathy in metformin-treated early Type 2 diabetes mellitus
BACKGROUND Long-term therapy with metformin was shown to decrease the Vitamin B12 level and manifested as peripheral neuropathy. AIM The aim of this study is to define the prevalence of Vitamin B12 deficiency in early Type 2 diabetic patients (duration ≤5 years or drug treatment ≤3 years) and the relationship among metformin exposure and levels of cobalamin (Cbl), folic acid, and homocysteine...
متن کاملAssociation of Vitamin B12 Deficiency and Metformin Use in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes
We evaluated the prevalence of vitamin B12 deficiency and associated factors in type 2 diabetes patients using metformin. A total of 799 type 2 diabetes patients using metformin was enrolled. Vitamin B12 and folate levels were quantified by chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay. Vitamin B12 deficiency was defined as vitamin B12 ≤ 300 pg/mL without folate deficiency (folate > 4 ng/mL). The prevale...
متن کاملMetformin-related vitamin B12 deficiency.
Metformin is an invaluable hypoglycaemic agent. We report two cases who had symptomatic vitamin B12 deficiency related to metformin use; the mechanisms are discussed. The clinician must be aware of the possibility of metformin-associated B12 deficiency in users who suffer cognitive impairment, peripheral neuropathy, subacute combined degeneration of the cord or anaemia.
متن کاملInvestigation of the vitamin B12 deficiency with peripheral neuropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus treated using metformin
OBJECTIVE The relationship between vitamin B12 deficiency and peripheral neuropathy has been shown in a number of previous studies. Metformin is the indispensable first-line treatment for type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) worldwide. One of the adverse effects of the use of metformin is vitamin B12 deficiency. In the present study, we investigated the relationship between vitamin B12 deficiency and ...
